Community Head Injury Resource Services of Toronto (CHIRS), formerly known as Ashby House, started in 1978 as the first community-based brain injury rehabilitation program in North America. From its origins as a transitional group home, CHIRS has evolved into a multi-service agency that provides a broad range of supports to a clientele with diverse and complex needs.

CHIRS is a registered not-for-profit charitable organization primarily funded by Ontario Health and by the Ontario Ministry of Health. CHIRS has earned the highest level of accreditation awarded by Accreditation Canada since 1997. To earn this award the agency is assessed against national acquired brain injury standards. CHIRS was also selected as one of 14 programs in the world included in the ‘Casebook of Exemplary Evidence-Informed Programs that Foster Community Participation after ABI’ – making CHIRS a recognized centre of excellence worldwide.

We at CHIRS acknowledge that we are visitors on this land which was originally named Tkaronto and is the traditional territories of the Anishinabee, the Haudenosaunee, the Mississaugas of the Credits, and the Wendat peoples. We also acknowledge the vast diversity of Indigenous people who have lived, and who are currently caring for this land locally and across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that this land is covered by Treaty 13 and One Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant. CHIRS will continue to walk together with all people to nurture all their abilities and gifts to better this land. CHIRS is aware that this acknowledgement is only first steps and actions are needed to truly honour the relationship with the land and Indigenous people.
